The Weakest Argument Ever

Well it says in the bible that…

This is equivalent to me saying that anything ever written is invariably true. Furthermore, if this were to be a half viable argument one would have to adhere to every line of the bible. Here’s a few:

“For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him.” (Leviticus 20:9)

“If a man lies with a woman during her sickness and uncovers her nakedness, he has discovered her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from her people.” (Leviticus 20:18)

“Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.” (Leviticus 25:44-45)

“Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.” (Leviticus 19:27)

“…and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.” (Leviticus 11:7)

“…do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear material woven of two kinds of material.” (Leviticus 19:19)

“But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you.” (Leviticus 11:10)

“They (shellfish) shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination.” (Leviticus 11:11)

“Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales; that shall be an abomination to you.” (Leviticus 11:12)

So what if these are all Old Testament versus, since Creationists base their belief in the age of Earth on this book. They also get their hatred of homosexuality from this book.

Expecting me to believe that every word of a story book that’s several thousand years old is true with absolutely no to very little supporting scientific evidence is absurd. God did not write the bible, men did. Men who heard many stories, and furthermore enjoyed telling stories themselves. I don’t hold a word of it to be anymore than a reference for a group of people to live their lives.

So please, do not ever say to me – “it’s in the bible.”

I just found that you moved your blog, so I know these are old posts, but I’m just finding them for the first time now…

A lot of the rules in the old testament were nullified by the coming of Christ. That’s why I shave and wear synthetic clothing and don’t kill people for disrespect. It’s not because I selectively believe what I want to. On the other hand some are still kept, such as the things God says about marriage and the story of creation. It’s not clear just from reading Leviticus what is and isn’t still applicable, but by reading the New Testament the differences come out. So go ahead and make fun of Jews for burning cows (since they do believe that), but please, make fun of me for the things I actually believe.

    A couple of minor points:
    – The age of the earth as having been created in 4004BC (as I assume that’s what you’re referring to) is wrong. There are gaps in the biblical genealogies so the guy who calculated that number was incorrect. I don’t believe that the earth is billions of years old, however – if you want to know why, let me know and I’ll explain on my blog.
    – _Hatred_ of homosexuality justified from the Bible is wrong. I believe homosexuality is wrong but I don’t hate homosexuals. I could also write more on this.

To argue a moral stance by using bible verses when you are talking to someone who doesn’t believe in the bible is ridiculous.
