Dirty politics

Barely 3 days into the federal election campaign and things are getting dirty between the Liberals and Conservatives.

First, the Conservatives have had to apologize for an ad where a puffin was shown pooping on Stephane Dion. I saw this on Global and thought, really? The ad was pulled quickly and only featured a tiny puffin.

Next, the Liberals have launched Scandalpedia, ironically omitting any references to the former gun registry and sponsorship scandals that plagued the Liberal party.

Not to be outdone online, the Conservatives launched Dionbook (note: the CPC removed this link), a Facebook “satire” with all the humour you could expect from the Conservative party.

Next, with the smoke slowly settling after the mess surrounding the leaders debate a few things seem clear:

First, if May and the Greens want to be a full party with full respect they shouldn’t necessarily be making backroom deals with Dion and the Liberals not to compete in key ridings.

Next, Duceppe so far is the only leader to come out of this mess looking better. Harper and Layton looks like asses for saying they’d back out if May was allowed to debate, Dion looks worse for essentially wanting May there as a cheerleader (no sexism intended), and May looks like a Liberal without branding issues.

And really, if you think elections can’t be bought in Canada, just see how American the Conservatives want this election to be. Also, note the sad irony of the Liberals trying to feel good about their Air Inuit planes (as opposed to the Conservative and New Democrat Air Canada airbuses):

Dunn said the plane can land on gravel runways and “can get us closer to the people.”

Finally, on a lighter note, figure out this statement from Harper after being asked what kind of vegetable he would be (now that’s investigative reporting):

Let me say this. I would choose, if I had to, instead to be a fruit. Just what I am: sweet and colourful.

So has Harper now warmed up to the LGBTQ movement, or is that just a slip?

  1. It was only a tiny puffin? Hahaha! Does that make it more or less insulting? Not even worth being pooped on by a regular-size puffin?

Scandalpedia sounds like a good idea, in terms of government transparency and citizen awareness. Too bad it’s being done in a partisan way, rather than as an actual user-edited wiki. Although, I suppose at least this way half the stories get told accurately. If it was open to edits, it could easily become full of lies. Sigh. There’s no winning.

    Dionbook sounds pretty familiar, though…

  2. I’m not gonna lie, I think the conservative smear ads are hilarious, but only because I’ve seen and read articles that portray the ‘real’ Dion. I”m almost impressed at how ridiculous they can make him look!

  3. SCANDALS! SCANDALS!

    URGENT!

SOME OF THE WORST CASES OF RACIAL PREJUDICE IN WORLD HISTORY!

PLEASE MAKE SURE PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER GETS THE INFORMATION BELOW!

(There are thousands of copies of the information below on the Internet in Canada.)

    LONG LIVE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!

Speaking of Barack Obama—Barack Obama is a racial-minority individual and does not like racism:

CONSTRUCTIVE WORLDWIDE DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION RELATING TO SCANDALS:

    (I) I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed atrocious, racist, hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism which I am not at liberty to mention. Many people know what Bush did. And many people will know what Bush did—even until the end of the world. Bush was absolute evil. Bush is now like a fugitive from justice. Bush is a psychological prisoner. Bush often worries. In any case, Bush will go down in history in infamy.

(II) It is opined that Bill Clinton committed terrifying, racist, hate crimes during his presidency, and I am not free to say anything further about it. ‘Be sure your sins will find you out’ (Numbers 32:23).

(III) What if basically all racial-minority people would subscribe to the interpretations that George Herbert Walker Bush committed monstrous, racist, hate crimes while he was the President of the United States? It will eventually come out: it is only a matter of time.

(IV) I know it may be hard to believe. However, Ronald Wilson Reagan committed horrible, racist, hate crimes during his presidency.

(There are thousands of copies on the Internet (by March 29, 2009) indicating the contents of (I), (II), (III), and (IV). For example, one can go to Google right now, type “George W. Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism,” hit “Enter,” and readily find 1,000 or more copies indicating content of (I). For example, one can go to Google right now, type “Bill Clinton committed racist hate crimes, and I am not free to say anything further about it,” hit “Enter,” and readily find more than 310 copies indicating content of (II). For example, one can go to Google right now, type “George Herbert Walker Bush committed monstrous, racist, hate crimes,” hit “Enter,” and readily find more than 130 copies indicating content of (III). For example, one can go to Google right now, type “Ronald Wilson Reagan committed horrible, racist, hate crimes during his presidency,” hit “Enter,” and readily find more than 90 copies indicating content of (IV). And there are thousands of copies in very many countries around the world. For example, there are innumerable copies in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Russia, the United Kingdom, etc.)
