IIRC, predictions from smart economists (Krugman, Stiglitz, et al) were that when the recession ended, it would be a jobless recovery. And, lo and behold, it is.

Be nice if, just once, people who work for a living managed to do just a little bit better, but I don’t hold out much hope.

If people are unemployed it doesn’t matter to them if they have confidence in the economy or not. They’re still unemployed. “Confidence” in the economy is another useless phrase to those without jobs.
