Bookshelf

This is (a partial) the list of (notable) books I’ve read (in recent memory) (and links to related posts if any), am reading, or plan on reading (sorted in categories but otherwise in no particular order).

Read (Atheism):

  • The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (I don’t have an actual review of this book and since it was one of my first atheist reads and the most popular I will likely read it again soon)
  • Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali (I highly recommend this book to everyone for a look into African fundamentalist Islam)
  • Atheist Universe by David Mills (not much new in this book if you’ve read other, but an easy read)
  • Imagine No Superstition by Stephen Uhl (not too good of a read except for the Catholic jokes)
  • Has Science Found God? by Victor Stenger (generally good)
  • God: The Failed Hypothesis by Victor Stenger (signed copy) (very thorough refutation of the God most people believe in)
  • In Defense of Atheism by Michael Onfray (I only made it half way through this book)
  • Secular Conscience by Austin Dacey (one of my favourite, signed copy)

Read (Fiction):

  • Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (read the entire series twice) by Douglas Adams (everyone needs to read at least the first in this series)
  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (easy and enjoyable read)
  • Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien (slightly longer and more drawn out story from the movies ;-) )
  • The Simarillion by J.R.R. Tokien (its as bad as reading the bible of Middle-Earth, don’t even attempt unless you are uber-Tolkien nerd, I made it 1/3-1/2)
  • His Dark Materials Trilogy (Golden Compass Trilogy) by Philip Pullman (amazing trilogy, read them)
  • The Integration of Science and Spirituality by Deno Kazanis (I didn’t get far in this farce, and I’m placing it under fiction since it is a better fit then non-fiction)
  • Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams

Read (Science):

  • Surely You Must be Joking Mr. Feynman by Richard Feynman (a collection of stories about a truly inspiring character, everyone should read)
  • But what do You care what other people think? by Richard Feynman (if you loved the previous one read this too)
  • Perfectly Reasonable Deviations from the Beaten Track by Richard Feynman (I’m about 1/2 through this, these are his letters)
  • QED by Richard Feynman (a simple explanation of quantum electrodynamics)
  • The varieties of scientific experience by Carl Sagan (a beautiful way to see the world from another brilliant physicist)
  • The Age of Spritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil (early predictions on the future of technology)
  • The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil (further predictions on the future of technology, a controversial but interesting idea)
  • On the Shoulders of Giants edited by Stephen Hawking (a collection of great works that laid the groundwork for modern physics, some are quite dry however – unless you know your circular geometry)
  • Death from the Skies by Phil Plait

Read (Christian):

  • Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis (short summary: Don’t bother)
  • Soul Cravings by Erwin McManus (I only got through 2/3s of this)
  • Would you believe? by Tom Harpur

Read (Bible):

  • Genesis
  • Exodus
  • Leviticus (I didn’t write a review of Leviticus, but this is where all the crazy laws come from)

Read (Politics):

  • RMR The Book by Rick Mercer
  • Sheeple by Garth Turner
  • Losing Confidence by Elizabeth May

Read (Non-Fiction):

  • Philosophy of Science: A Very Short Introduction by Samir Okasha
  • Philosophy of Science: The Central Issues edited by Martin Curd & J.A. Cover (this was a class textbook and I read over half of it, and will likely read more in the future)
  • Wheels, Clocks, and Rockets: A History of Technology by Donald Cardwell (I read about half of this for my history of technology class)
  • The Elements of Moral Philosophy by James Rachels (as well as other selected readings in moral philosophy)

On my to read list:

  • The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman
  • Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein
  • Godless by Dan Barker
  • Trouble with Physics by Lee Smolin
  • On Liberty & Utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill
  • The Social Contract by Jean-Jaques Rousseau
  • The little book of atheist spirituality by Andre Comte-Sponville
  • Marx & Engels: Basic writings on politics & philosophy edited by Lewis S. Feuer
  • Reinventing the Sacred by Stuart Kauffman (need to find or purchase)
  • Evolutionary Creation [external] by Denis Lamoureux (when published)
  • Quantum Gods [external] by Victor Stenger (when published)
