This video was sent to me by a reader, it’s only had a couple hundred views, and bears no party signatures, and was posted by “thecanadianblogger” who only signed up a few days ago…
Reading the info attached to the video definitely points to this being a Conservative video, maybe we’ll get to see it on TV soon (which would be an awesome way to go from Liberal bland but positive to Con muddy attack):
Who is Michael Ignatieff. After living abroad for three decades, calling America his country, he now says he shares your values. But does he?
sounds like something the NDP would say. It also might be from a human rights group…but if it were would they not also go after Harper, who is the same on almost every subject?
The NDPs line will likely be more of a “Liberal Tory same old story,” campaign. I’ve never really seen them go after someone for their “patriotism” or nationality. The Tories, on the other hand, have already launched an Ignatieff “Just Visiting” campaign that questions his nationality. This seems to fit closer to that message.
The attack radio ads the NDP played in January against the Liberals attempted to play their backing down from the coalition as a weakness (since they weren’t standing up for Canadians), not Iggy’s personal record.
And the ‘we’ to which Iggy is referring in that last clip is ‘Americans’; he appears to be including himself or using the royal We. For Canadians, either is significant.
Full quote re targeted assassinations, in context: “Sticking too firmly to the rule of law simply allows terrorists too much leeway to exploit our freedoms. Abandoning the rule of law altogether betrays our most valued institutions. To defeat evil, we may have to traffic in evils: indefinite detention of suspects, coercive interrogations, targeted assassinations, even pre-emptive war.”
Full NYT article.
Chrystal, thanks for the full quote – I don’t care – I do care that democracy is built on the rule of law and it’s a slippery slope when we say to others “do as we say and not really what we are doing and thinking of doing.”
And this was about Afghanistan, Iraq – phony wars over geopolitical positioning and resources. Iggy will have us right in on any war America wages.
Interesting. It looks to me like a Conservative ad attacking from the left (and pretending to be an NDP ad). If true, that’s a fascinating tactic.
Better ad, actually by new democrats incidentally:
