It can be done

Linda Duncan and the NDP won Edmonton Strathcona. It was close and came to within 500 votes.

I didn't post earlier as I was at the campaign office, biting my nails as each poll came in. Of course all the best polls for us came in last, so we had to watch Jaffer have a lead of 1000 votes until the last couple minutes.

I did get two advantages though:

  1. We got the results before the news, and also knew which polls were left to come in (so when the media predicted a Jaffer win and aired his acceptance speech - which I need to find a copy of), we weren't concerned yet.
  2. Open bar.

I'll post more on the entire election later. I'm also off to Toronto for CUPC tomorrow, so my posting may become more sporadic until next week.

Finally, I haven't forgotten about Photonics Briefs. There's a new issue of Nature Photonics out that I've been meaning to drag out into a couple posts, and I may also be using some stuff I learn at CUPC too.

So until later, cheers to a noble victory.

  1. It was a pleasure working on this campaign with you, Ian. Even if you don’t get to do it with us again next time, I’m sure you’ve got the campaign stories to last a lifetime!

  2. It awesome to see a big win In Edmonton. Its a beginning. Lets hope the NDP learns from this and can build. I post on what the NDP needs to do next. One is learn from Harper.

  3. @Rick: Think only about short-term political and economic gain?

@Ian: When you get back, you’ve got at least one more drink you’re not paying for waiting for you. Good work, man.

By the way, did anyone else notice the absurd front-page story the day of the election? A psychic predicted a Harper minority (no seat numbers, natch) and other predictions which were so blindingly obvious anyone following the campaign could have made them (i.e. Layton has families in mind but people doubt if he can lead, Harper would stay in power 40 years if he could, Dion is seen as risky, May (or potentially the Green movement; the psychic’s English is only slightly better than Dion’s) is being taken more seriously, etc — essentially an amalgamation of every campaign ad).

To include such a story on the front page of the Journal the day of the election is downright insulting. It’s also depressing, since the psychic’s so deluded at such a young age (she’s 22).
