Canada’s parks now armed, border left defenceless

I found it kind of ironic reading the Journal this morning that Prime Minister Harper is pushing to arm the park wardens (this comes from a Chretien-era recommendation), while leaving our border guards with no weapons.

I found it even worse that instead of arming all the wardens, he plans to only give handguns to some, and embarrass the rest by no longer giving them proper attire.

Remaining wardens -- all of whom were formerly responsible for enforcing the National Parks Act -- have been stripped of any insignia that identify them as enforcement officers, including their traditional green and khaki uniforms and famed Stetson-style hats. Instead, they have been issued ball caps and T-shirts similar to civilians employed as visitor-services clerical staff.

Our wardens (if they are still to be called that), will be missed.
