Liberate this
George Bush and Gordon Brown (Prime Minister, UK) have issued warnings to Iran about its supposed nuclear programs. However, at the same time they ignore archaic and dehumanizing laws that are still being enforced in ally and trading partner Saudia Arabia.
In this instance, we find that contrary to earlier reports that Saudia Arabia was planning to end its ban on female drivers, they have arrested a woman for having the nerve to drive a car!
The woman's "legal guardian" -- her husband -- was required to sign a declaration that he would not allow her to drive again, it said. It was not immediately clear if she was released or would face legal action.
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that forbids women from driving on the basis of fatwas, or religious opinions, from clerics who say it is un-Islamic.
If the US or UK gave a damn about human rights and not just rich oil countries, wouldn't they be doing something there?
Rapture Video
I posted a new YouTube video in response to some rapture video someone posted on one of my videos.

Not seeing the Happening
If you thought The Core was weak on science, listen to this bit about M. Night Shamalan's (because ghosts and aliens weren't enough of a reach) new movie "The Happening":
M. Night Shyamalan’s critically-panned flick The Happening is Hollywood’s first blockbuster to promote the anti-evolutionary theory of intelligent design. Maybe you thought Ben Stein’s ill-fated documentary Expelled was the only movie to argue in favor of the neo-Christian idea that an “intelligent designer” created the universe. Think again. With its references to “unexplained acts of nature” and a science teacher main character who calls evolution “just a theory,” The Happening is basically a giant propaganda machine for intelligent design. Maybe science journalists are jizzing all over its allegedly realistic plants-attack-humans plot, but we talked to Shyamalan and we know the truth.
Avowed Christian Shyamalan told us that The Happening is really about religious faith, and explained that he chose Mark Wahlberg to play science teacher Elliot Moore because of the actor’s intense belief in Jesus. [emphasis added]
Oddly enough, I came across this gem of a description from Uncommon Descent (I'm not going to link them). They go on to describe how this is just the start of the "culture war" between evolution and fundie-creationism, I think that's a hidden concession they failed to convince anyone that ID is science (since it isn't).
If you think there's any reason to see this shoddy attempt at "science"-fiction, read the rest of the review (spoilers) that's at io9.
Translation attempt
In response to PZ Myer's odd letter, I shall attempt to decipher it and provide a translation.
Evolution explains designer
Evolution versus creation is a false dichotomy. Evolution as a viable mechanism causing the ascent of man also explains the existence of the creator.
The false dichotomy argument is familiar, and valuable for helping some theists "have it both ways."
If man could evolve to his present status physically, culturally and technologically within the age of this planet (approximately 4.5 billion years), then obviously the technology required to build species entirely of one's own choosing could be developed within the age of the universe.
The first part of this statement is just a fact, however there is no reason to assume "the technology required to build species" could develop over the age of the universe.
Bill C-51 or making Alternative Drugs as accountable as real drugs
There has been an incredible grass-roots protest against the Canadian federal government's attempt to pass Bill C-51, or the amendments to the Canada Food and Drug Act. In Health Minister Tony Clement's words:
Bill C-51 does not target natural health products; it also covers products including drugs, medical devices, cells and tissues and organs, vaccines and veterinary drugs. The Bill provides crucial updates to the Food and Drug Act, which had not been updated in about 50 years. It also does not include any changes to the Natural Health Products Regulations, which have been in force since January 1, 2004. Moreover, the intention of the Bill and Regulations is to facilitate access to safe and effective natural health products, for all Canadians who desire them.
The legislation aims ensure that tainted products are found and recalled, that what is on the label is actually in the bottle, and that health claims are supported by evidence. My department often issues warnings about mislabelled products or products that have serious adverse reactions. For example, diethylene glycol was found in fluoridated toothpaste, and incorrect ingredients that could cause liver damage were found in Black Cohosh products. We have also seen cases where a natural health product makes a completely unfounded health claim- the ability to cure cancer or SARS, for example. In addition, the increasing import of products and ingredients from foreign countries will require oversight to assure product safety and quality for Canadians. [Emphasis added]
The movement against the bill is being led (although they don't admit anywhere on their website) by the company Truehope. A good summary article of this situation was published by Skeptic magazine. They allege that Truehope is running an "astroturf" marketing campaign, by drumming up local support by faking being a major victim here.
The issue to me is that currently in Canada these companies are subject to minor fines ($5,000 max) and no real penalities for LYING or cheating their customers out of $75 per bottle (the cost of Truehopes Empower Plus). Bill C-51 is NOT going to send government officials into your home to steal your Vitamin C (that would violate our charter rights and you could appeal any charges to the supreme court).
Naturapathic companies are afraid of this bill because it is a step to making them actually accountable for their claims. And the facts are they just can't live up to that.
So please, take the time and actually question, who has more to lose/gain with Bill C-51 "Big Pharma" or "Big Natura"?
I used to respect the Unitarians…
I received an email through some of my contacts a couple months ago inviting me to the Unitarian Church of Edmonton for a sermon on "The New Atheism." I either slept in or was busy that morning so I didn't make it. I just found the sermon online and am a bit appalled at the misrepresentations presented.
I will reserve the label ‘atheist’ for those people who are certain. I have always been puzzled by folks who are positive that there is no God. I am confused by them.
...
But then they make a logical error. Because God can’t be proved, or even detected on their terms, therefore they claim there is no God and no possibility of a God. That is faulty reasoning. Science is clear that you cannot prove a negative. The non-existence of the divine is as unprovable as its existence. Absolute atheism is not a rational position or a factual claim. Instead it is a faith statement, no different from the religious creeds the atheists abhor.
Expelled moves North
After defeating a lawsuit by Yoko Ono (for ironic misuse of the song Imagine), Ben Stein's tradegy Expelled is coming to Canadian theatres on June 27th. I'm not sure how heavy they plan to show this, but so far there are no ads, no listings about release (other than the fact Cineplex and Empire Theatres list it on their websites) or anything else you'd expect for an "over the top success."
So far I feel no need to go to the effort, or expense, of seeing it. But, if you think I'm being closed minded, offer to pay for my ticket (I won't have any popcorn, and I'll even go to a matinee or cheap theatre - provided I get a lift), and I'll see it. I just don't feel its worth my money.
Daveberta is brilliant
For quotes like this:
I would just like to point out how much fun I'm having watching all those "I hate the CBC because it's a waste of money" people be up in arms because the CBC might be having second thoughts about having to pay $500 every time they play the song.
I read Dave Cournoyer's blog.
Jim Carrey shames Canada
What should actors never do? Talk about shit they know nothing about.
Carrey spoke out during a march in Washington D.C. on Wednesday to raise awareness of the presence of toxins in vaccines, which McCarthy claims was the cause of 5-year-old son Evan's condition.
Shut up Jim Carrey. You too Jenny McCarthy.
